Chaplin - artist and warrior
One of the best films ever made is the "Dictator" by Charles Chaplin. It´s a fantastic way of showing the demonic in the nazi ideology. Hitler is called Hynkel and in a very intelligent way Chaplin is both making fun of and showing the mercilessness of this man.
The film was made in 1939 and Chaplin stated to shoot it before the war started and finished it after Hitler attacked Poland. In US it was quite controversial and nowone lended him m to make it but he had his own (like Mel Gibbons, in making the Passion). There were quite strong rightwing winds blowing both sides of the Atlantic ocean.
When finished many European countries did´nt dare to show it. One time in Croatia, the resistant army sneaked in to a cinema full of German soldiers, they changed the film to the "Dictator", and the german soldiers started to shoot at the screeen!! I guess the got a good laugh!
The film was for many Jews, like having a little David that dared to make fun of Goliath. Many Jews in US has given that testamonie, that someone stood up for them. Chaplin hmself was from a poor Italian family in London.
In the end of the movie Chaplin make a speach that talks of the only way for true humanity - love of the other. There is power in the art that carries the truth.
